Mark did a great job explaining that answer to your question. I have had a lot of coversations with homosexuals about the difference between same sex attraction vs. homosexual sex, etc. but in the end lust is lust including same sex lust. There is no way to come up with any other conclusion from the whole counsel of Scripture that God has always only intended men and woman to be in romantic, sexual, marriage relationships.
Okay I gather that it is written in some old book that homosexuality is wrong.
Why would you place such a weight on an ancient text? The same people said it was wrong to eat pork or wear clothing woven from two cloths.
Also the justification of marriage as something instituted by God seems improbable. Pair bondings exist in many other animals, it obviously owes a lot more to evolution than to religion.
Tony, worldview becomes highly important at this point. Obviously if your not convinced of God or Scripture then your left to your own wisdom to navigate through the complexities of life. However if your worldview is shaped by a living God who actively expresses His will and heart towards man and that through a magnificent string of events and people through thousands of years knit together a document that is both divine in origin and wholly true then its quite easy to see how one would gladly align oneself with the revealed heart and nature of said God.
My goal is here is not to debate the reality of God to you as He is more real than either of us can fathom at this point and all men are created with the vacuum in their soul to hunger for the “more” which no one is exempt from. You hunger like all of us.
The question for many will always be how long can a man hold out filling the vacuum in his heart with the things that will never satisfy?
My question will always be why would they want to?
God bless you you Tony. Gay, straight or otherwise. I am praying right now, over your life, Ephesians 1:15-19:
Ephesians 1:17-18 (The Message)
15-19That’s why, when I heard of the solid trust you have in the Master Jesus and your outpouring of love to all the followers of Jesus, I couldn’t stop thanking God for you—every time I prayed, I’d think of you and give thanks. But I do more than thank. I ask—ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory—to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing him personally, your eyes focused and clear, so that you can see exactly what it is he is calling you to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life he has for his followers, oh, the utter extravagance of his work in us who trust him—endless energy, boundless strength!
Sorry I was raised as a Christian but the above is just so much mumbo-jumbo to me. I’ve got a lovely family, they’re far more than I ever wished for in my wildest dreams. I’m a satisfied man and I don’t have any gods to thank for it.
Being “raised” with a certain set of beliefs unfortunately does nothing for actual understanding. Head knowledge and understanding with your heart of two very different things. In the world of intellect worship its pretty easy to treat spiritual things passe’ and many Christians in the western culture simply don’t really live what they profess to believe.
This results in a transcendent God being reduced to formulas, information and a few good lists. Your experience would seem to epitomize much of modern mans experience with present day Christianity. I am sorry Tony. Despite this sad reality God is real and all the knowledge in the world wont change that.
As to whether you have God to thank for your life, well, lets just say that He has more to do with it than you could imagine. I know, I know, you don’t believe. The vacuum is still there Tony. I pray God’s best on your journey of life. It sounds like He has blessed you a lot.
How do you know that homosexuality is wrong?
